Fuse, the VHS has been long out of print, recently the band pu it to DVD WITHOUT Steve Perrys permission, being that all things pertaining to Journey pre2000 still have to go thru him for approval....Journey2000 is a brand new band split 5 ways and is a total seperate business deal. In order for the band to release Journey2001 the concert, they had to get Perrys approval since the tunes were all or most cowritten by Perry.
Anyway, Perry found out about the DVD and made the band cease and take it out of circulation, I was able to get one before they were destroyed.

it makes me appreciate steve perry even less! i loved his singing and all. i just can't believe the rest of the guys just signed over the rights to just one guy! unfortunate.

It's not that they signed the rights away, it's that they forgot that it's a 'business'. They chose to fire Steve Perry, but he is still a business partner when it comes to anything pertaining to Journey up to 1996 and releasing Frontiers and Beyond without his concent was a no no.
I think it was Irving Azoff that went to Perry and got him to approve of the band doing a live DVD and then asked Perry to put together 'with' input from the other members the DVD collection that came out last year.
Now I have heard Perry is working on a new live Journey DVD culled from the famous Houston MTV concert, there might even been extra footage.
Very kewl, indeed.
Even tho there's "talk" of Perry's att & the band's "situations" w him [some likened to the "Don King/Tyson" or "Rocky Balboa Vs. Tommy Gunn" type syndrome], I will say that he is still one of my fave pop/rock singers, ever.
Even if he DOES have those so-called, "80s, high-pitched contratenor/falsetto, 'girlie-boy'" vocals that the metal guys used to bag on [because it didn't sound as if he'd swallowed a fistful of razorblades]...I think some peeps were just getting a little tired [ya think?!] of all those types of bands w the high vox getting signed...& ESP the Perry wannabes in your local clubs & garages...
But then I always liked that style anyway. Brad Delp, Fran Cosmo [Boston], Tony Harnell [TNT], Rik Emmit [Triumph], Max B from GTR [w Mover], Geoff Tate [Queensryche], & Steelheart's, etc, all used to slay me...even Warrant, & Europe's, I'm embarassed to say. Final Countdown
Augeri's vox are very nice...& he sounds a lot like Stv, & can cover the parts, but...he "still quite ain't no Perry." ;cp
Deen on Mother Father is still kickin my tail. I can hear that it's not Perry, mostly, but I am still a little suspect along w RW about hearing those little Perryisms & nuances that sound a little TOO much like Perry himself...even Deeno can't be THAT good an impersonator[?!]...[background/accompanying trax?!]...;c)

Perry BITES! The new lineup is great. I saw them live and it was refreshing. The band has new life. Deen idolized Steve and cherished his signature parts. Even Smith said he would not play them note-4-note if he was in Deen?s position. I liked Arrival (which got back to the theme title?s Journey was after when they did Raised on Radio which Perry controlled, getting away from the master plan after Frontiers).

?Ya know, Steve Smith was one of my favorite drummers I've ever had a chance to work with. And there were times where, because I was a drummer, I really would call on him to do certain things for me, and he would do certain things for the song, and between the two of us, there were just things that were hit off of, and sang around, and played with, and he was trying to be, um, I don't know, he was kinda the conductor of the band, but I was definitely into helping him conduct the band and asking him for certain things to do that so that it would give me an opportunity to hit off some of the things he's guiding the band through. Ya know, he was my favorite conductor...?

Perry not letting go
In 2004, Journey is going to get a star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame.
SP: ?the big question is whether I would show up or not and, you know, I gotta tell you, the honest, honest feeling is that ummm, I just don't know if I want to do that, it's not that I don't think I'll show up at the star someday and take a picture with ah, standing on it, and ah, look at it and have a moment of reflection to myself, or how hard it was to possibly see that happening in my lifetime, but whether or not we stand together anywhere again has got to be difficult for me to say.
Perry full of himself
A request came in for a new film, written by Patty Jenkins, and directed by Patty Jenkins, and she and Charlize Theron wrote me a letter and ummm, requesting that I at least consider this one scene in the film called "Monster" that they're finishing, to use the song "Don't Stop Believin'"
SP: I was moved by the letter and I returned the phone call, talked to Charlize for a while, and ah, then Patty came on and we talked for a long time, and they said could we just send you a piece of the film so you can see what we're talking about?they sent me a piece of the film?I called back and said could I come down and, you know, meet you, and talk to you guys about it?I went down and sat while we dubbed it into the film, got to be involved in one more little emotional equalisation of tweaking, add a little highs, a little bottom, 'cause you're dealing with the sub-woofers that you can help, and enhance it a bit more, so I got into that process with the mixer, and so, it really is an amazing scene.
--Just give them the stupid song dude and let it go. The guy has to control their movie project. How about, ?Hey thanks, it?s a privilege you want to use the song I wrote?and thanks for the huge coin I?ll get as well..I mean, I control all Journey stuff anyway and make tons of cash sitting on my <s>butt</s> hip doing nothing but live in the past." I bet he took credit somehow for Charlize's Academy Award..."It was my song that gave her the emotional strength to push onward..."

i totally understand what you mean. i got into journey when escape was out. so that was THE ORIGINAL journey band for me.
at the same time, it is a trip seeing the two new guys, steve augeri and deen castranovo playing with these guys cuz they do a great job. i felt the same way when randy jackson (american idol) and mike baird had filled in for ross and steve. although i thought that that was sacrilege!
Yeah, the DVD is worth having. It's cool to see all the old, horrible videos (Steve Smith drumming on trash cans on Separate Ways is just frightening), and Faithfully is still the best rock ballad ever written. Some of the live stuff really rocks.
I also have the Japan concert on VHS. I assume it's the same one you guys are talking about on DVD. I bought mine on Ebay for nine bucks.

I have met & also worked for several musicians, dancers, & singers who were extremely insecure, control freaks, NTM narcissistic & full of themselves.
I will have to say that out of all those I worked w, Marty Balin was the ONLY really down-to-earth guy in the bunch...I say this as, a "real guy," & not "feigned" or "false humility."
Many peeps will present a facade of humility, nobility, or martyrdom to their fans...but get in a closed room w them & it's an entirely diff matter altogether. Over a period of time you WILL learn the real person hiding underneath. Throw some cash issues into the mix & watch the real she height fly...
